Do I need a Pantone book and how often should I change it?

pantone book

A Pantone book is a collection of colour swatches that are used to accurately communicate and match colours in various industries such as printing, graphic design, fashion, and more. While it may not be necessary for everyone, having a Pantone book can be incredibly useful for professionals who rely on colour accuracy and consistency in their work.

There are several types of Pantone books available, each designed for different purposes. The Pantone Solid Colours book contains over 1,800 solid colours and is commonly used for printing and graphic design. The Pantone Metallics book features 301 metallic colours for a wide range of applications. The Pantone Pastels and Neons book includes 154 pastel and neon shades for eye-catching designs. The Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors book is tailored for textile and fashion design, featuring over 2,100 colours in cotton swatches. Additionally, there are specialty books for specific industries such as plastics, coatings, and more.

One of the main benefits of Pantone swatches is that they provide a standardised colour matching system. Pantone colours are universal, meaning they can be replicated across different printers, materials, and even geographical locations. This ensures that the colours you see on your computer screen will match the final printed product, which can save time and money on reprints or corrections.

Another advantage of using Pantone swatches is that they can help you communicate your colour choices more effectively. When working with clients or colleagues, it can be difficult to describe a colour accurately in words. However, with a Pantone book, you can simply reference the colour swatch and ensure that everyone is on the same page. This can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that the final product meets everyone’s expectations.

In terms of how often you should change your Pantone book, it depends on how frequently you use it and how important colour accuracy is to your work. Pantone swatches can become faded or discoloured over time, which can affect the accuracy of the colours. Additionally, new colours are added to the Pantone system periodically, so if you work with a lot of new or trendy colours, you may need to update your Pantone book more frequently

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to replace your Pantone swatch book every two to three years. This will ensure that the colours are still accurate and that you have access to the latest additions to the Pantone system. However, if you work in an industry where colour accuracy is critical, you may want to replace your swatches more frequently to ensure that your work meets the highest standards.

brochure design

A Pantone book can be a valuable tool for professionals who need to communicate and match colours accurately, especially when designing for print. Although expensive, using Pantone swatches is worth every penny – imagine designing a full exhibition stand for a client, only for it to be printed and an unexpected colour is produced, or a large print run and the client’s brand colour is incorrect. These type of issues could turn out to be a costly mistake to rectify and could be avoided by specifying the correct colours, using a Pantone book.
