With so many businesses around, standing out isn’t just about looking good – it’s about being unforgettable. Whether you’re launching a new business or refreshing your identity, understanding what makes a brand memorable is key to building lasting connections with your audience.

Here are five design principles that ensure your brand doesn’t just show up – it sticks.

Consistency across every touchpoint

A memorable brand is recognisable wherever it appears – on your website, social media, packaging, or signage. Consistency in colour palette, typography, imagery and tone of voice builds trust and familiarity.

Tip: Create a brand style guide to keep your visual identity cohesive across platforms and teams.

Clear, purposeful typography

Fonts do more than convey words – they express personality. Whether it’s bold and modern or elegant and understated, your typography should reflect your brand’s values and tone.

Tip: Limit your font choices to two or three complementary styles to maintain clarity and hierarchy.

Strategic use of colour

Colour evokes emotion and influences perception. Think of Coca-Cola’s red or Spotify’s green – these choices aren’t accidental. They’re rooted in psychology and brand positioning.

Tip: Choose colours that resonate with your target audience and differentiate you from competitors.

Simplicity that’s easy to recall

Complex logos and cluttered layouts dilute impact. Memorable brands embrace simplicity – clean lines, clear messaging and intuitive design.

Tip: Ask yourself: can someone sketch your logo from memory? If not, it might need refining.

Authentic storytelling

Design isn’t just visual – it’s narrative. A strong brand tells a story that connects emotionally with its audience. From your tagline to your imagery, every element should reflect your mission and values.

Tip: Use real stories, testimonials and behind-the-scenes content to humanise your brand.

Final thoughts

Memorability isn’t magic – it’s method. By applying these five design principles, you’ll create a brand that not only looks the part but lives in the minds of your audience long after the first impression.

At Sarah Evans Creative, I help businesses craft visual identities that resonate, inspire and endure. Ready to make your brand unforgettable?

A Pantone book is a collection of colour swatches that are used to accurately communicate and match colours in various industries such as printing, graphic design, fashion, and more. While it may not be necessary for everyone, having a Pantone book can be incredibly useful for professionals who rely on colour accuracy and consistency in their work.

There are several types of Pantone books available, each designed for different purposes. The Pantone Solid Colours book contains over 1,800 solid colours and is commonly used for printing and graphic design. The Pantone Metallics book features 301 metallic colours for a wide range of applications. The Pantone Pastels and Neons book includes 154 pastel and neon shades for eye-catching designs. The Pantone Fashion, Home + Interiors book is tailored for textile and fashion design, featuring over 2,100 colours in cotton swatches. Additionally, there are specialty books for specific industries such as plastics, coatings, and more.

One of the main benefits of Pantone swatches is that they provide a standardised colour matching system. Pantone colours are universal, meaning they can be replicated across different printers, materials, and even geographical locations. This ensures that the colours you see on your computer screen will match the final printed product, which can save time and money on reprints or corrections.

Another advantage of using Pantone swatches is that they can help you communicate your colour choices more effectively. When working with clients or colleagues, it can be difficult to describe a colour accurately in words. However, with a Pantone book, you can simply reference the colour swatch and ensure that everyone is on the same page. This can help prevent misunderstandings and ensure that the final product meets everyone’s expectations.

In terms of how often you should change your Pantone book, it depends on how frequently you use it and how important colour accuracy is to your work. Pantone swatches can become faded or discoloured over time, which can affect the accuracy of the colours. Additionally, new colours are added to the Pantone system periodically, so if you work with a lot of new or trendy colours, you may need to update your Pantone book more frequently

As a general rule, it’s a good idea to replace your Pantone swatch book every two to three years. This will ensure that the colours are still accurate and that you have access to the latest additions to the Pantone system. However, if you work in an industry where colour accuracy is critical, you may want to replace your swatches more frequently to ensure that your work meets the highest standards.

A Pantone book can be a valuable tool for professionals who need to communicate and match colours accurately, especially when designing for print. Although expensive, using Pantone swatches is worth every penny – imagine designing a full exhibition stand for a client, only for it to be printed and an unexpected colour is produced, or a large print run and the client’s brand colour is incorrect. These type of issues could turn out to be a costly mistake to rectify and could be avoided by specifying the correct colours, using a Pantone book.

Design plays a crucial role in creating an effective and engaging website. Website design trends in 2023 show that we can expect to see some exciting developments in website design that will enhance the user experience and make websites more visually appealing. Here are some of the key graphic design trends that we anticipate for 2023:

Bold typography

Typography has always been an important aspect of website design and this year, we expect to see even bolder and more expressive typefaces. Website design will use typography to create a more distinct brand identity and to draw attention to key messages and content.

Dynamic gradients

Gradients have been a popular trend in website design for a while and we will no doubt see even more dynamic and colourful gradients. Often used to create backgrounds, overlays, and accents, designers use gradients to create depth, texture and dimension in their designs, and to add a sense of energy and excitement. However, it’s important to use them thoughtfully and with a purpose as they can become distracting if overused.

Illustrations

Illustrations are a versatile and engaging way to add personality and character to a website and can be easily personalised in a brand’s colours and style. More and more websites are incorporating custom illustrations to help to tell a story and convey a brand’s message in a more visual way. KFC have very successfully combined video and animated illustration in their ‘What the cluck?’ marketing, adding excitement and making it memorable.

Abstract art

Abstract art is becoming more popular in website design, as it offers a way to create unique and eye-catching designs. Websites use abstract art to create visual interest and to set themselves apart from their competitors. Wetransfer.com often features some lovely abstract art and dopplepress.com makes good use of abstract art.

3D design

It looks like 3D design is set to become more popular in 2023. Websites will use 3D design to create more realistic and immersive experiences for users. Products or services can be showcased in a more engaging way with the use of 3D.

Dark mode

Dark mode is not just a trend in web design, but also in graphic design. This growing trend offers a sleek and modern aesthetic. It uses dark backgrounds and light text to reduce eye strain and improve contrast, providing a more comfortable viewing experience. Also seen as more energy-efficient, dark mode can help conserve battery life on mobile devices. Apple’s ‘AirPods Pro’ web design is a great example.

Motion design

Motion design is the use of animation, video, and other dynamic elements to create a more engaging and interactive experience for users. In 2023, we expect to see more websites incorporating motion design into their designs. This will help to create a more dynamic and exciting user experience.

Parallax scrolling is a web design technique where the foreground and background move at different speeds, creating an illusion of depth and immersion. Commonly used in Storytelling and landing pages, parallax scrolling adds visual interest and enhances user engagement.

Minimalism

Good minimalist web design is clean, simple, and focuses on the essentials. It uses a limited colour palette, ample white space, and easy-to-read fonts. Navigation is clear and concise, and the design is optimised for quick loading times. Preferring to use functional design elements that enhance the user experience, it avoids unnecessary graphics and animations. This helps to reduce distractions, make the content more accessible and provide a streamlined, enjoyable browsing experience for users.

In conclusion, it looks like even more bold, dynamic, and engaging website design trends lie ahead for 2023. The trends outlined here will help to create more visually appealing and memorable websites, making it easier for brands to stand out in a crowded digital landscape.

Logo design for a business can be a challenging task, but with the right approach, I can create a logo that effectively represents your brand and helps you stand out from the competition. Here are some steps the we will work through together when designing your logo:

Define your brand

Before I start designing your logo, we need to need to have a clear understanding of your brand’s identity, values, and personality. What makes your brand unique, and what message do you want to communicate through your logo? We’ll spend some time brainstorming and coming up with a clear brand identity before moving on to the design process.

Research your competition

Take a look at the logos of your competitors to see what works and what doesn’t. You don’t want your logo to be too similar to that of a competitor, but you also don’t want it to be so different that it doesn’t fit in with your industry. We need to look for ways to differentiate you from your competition, while still fitting in with your industry’s norms.

Selecting brand colours

The colours we choose for your logo can have a big impact on how it’s perceived. Different colours can evoke different emotions and convey different messages. For example, blue is often associated with trust and stability, while red is associated with passion and energy. We’ll think carefully about the colours we choose and what message they send.

Choosing typography

The typography we choose for your logo can also have an impact on its effectiveness. The font should be easy to read and should complement the overall design of the logo. We may want to consider using custom typography to make your logo stand out from the crowd, to make it truly unique.

Generating ideas

Once we have a clear understanding of your brand identity, competition, colours, and typography, it’s time to start getting ideas onto paper, or at least screen! I’ll create a selection of design options for us to look at. We won’t worry too much about getting it perfect at this stage, as we’ll refine the ideas later.

Refining ideas

After I’ve created some initial ideas, it’s time to refine one or two. I’ll take your favourite ideas and refine them using your feedback and ideas. You can then show the selected designs to colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders to get their input. Listen carefully to their feedback and use it to refine your designs further.

Choose the final design

After we’ve refined the designs and you have received feedback, it’s time to choose your final logo design. Choose the design that best represents your brand identity, stands out from the competition, and resonates with your target audience. A good logo should be memorable and easily recognisable, stand out from the competition and be easily remembered by customers. A memorable logo can help build brand recognition and increase customer loyalty – think the ‘M’ of McDonalds, Apple’s icon, the Nike swoosh or Amazon’s smile logo.

Your logo should be timeless, not be easily dated and should be able to withstand the test of time, remaining relevant for many years to come. A logo that is too trendy may quickly become outdated and lose its effectiveness – e.g. there are lots of colour gradients around at the moment, however this will no doubt be less trendy in years to come and could look dated if applied to a logo.

Use your logo consistently

Once you have your final logo design, it’s important to use it consistently across all your marketing materials, including your website, social media profiles, business cards, printed items and more. Make sure your logo is visible and prominent in all your marketing materials to help build brand recognition. Brand guidelines are an essential tool to help build a strong, consistent brand. These will include your logo, fonts, colours, image style, tone of voice and more, and if used consistently will help you to build brand recognition, create a strong brand identity, and increase customer loyalty.

2. User-Generated Content

5. Polls and Surveys

Use polls and surveys to engage your audience and gather feedback. This could be a simple yes or no question or a more in-depth survey about your products or services. Polls and surveys can help you understand your audience better and tailor your content to their preferences.

6. Contests and Giveaways

Host a contest or giveaway to increase engagement and reward your followers. This could be anything from a photo contest to a prize draw for those who share your content. Contests and giveaways can help you generate buzz and attract new followers.

7. Live Streams

Host a live stream on social media to interact with your audience in real-time. This could be a Q&A session, a product launch, or a behind-the-scenes tour. Live streams can help you build a connection with your audience and create a sense of urgency around your content.

8. Seasonal Content

Create content around holidays, events, or seasons to stay relevant and timely. This could be anything from a Valentine’s Day promotion to a Christmas-themed video. Seasonal content can help you connect with your audience and generate excitement around your brand.

9. Collaborations

Partner with other businesses or influencers in your industry to create collaborative content. This could be a joint video, a podcast episode, or a social media campaign. Collaborations can help you reach a new audience and provide a fresh perspective on your brand.

10. Personal Stories

Branding is a crucial aspect of any business or organisation, and it goes beyond the mere creation of a logo or slogan. Good branding involves creating a strong identity that resonates with customers and stakeholders, and that reflects the values, goals, and personality of the organisation. So let’s take a look at the seven considerations for successful branding.

1. Clarity of message

One of the most important aspects of good branding is clarity of message. This means that the branding should be straightforward and easy to understand, with a clear message about what the organisation stands for and what it offers. A clear message helps to build trust and credibility with customers, who are more likely to engage with a brand that they can easily understand.

2. Consistency

Another key consideration of good branding is consistency. This means that the branding should be consistent across all channels and touchpoints, from the website and social media to print materials and physical locations. Consistency helps to build familiarity and recognition with customers, which is important for establishing a strong brand identity.

3. Authenticity

Authenticity is also an important consideration when it comes to good branding. This means that the brand should be true to its values and purpose, and that it should not mislead customers or stakeholders. Authenticity helps to build trust and credibility with customers, who are more likely to engage with a brand that they believe is honest and genuine.

4. Differentiation

Good branding should also focus on differentiation. This means that the brand should stand out from its competitors and offer something unique and valuable to customers. Differentiation helps to create a strong brand identity and can lead to increased customer loyalty and engagement.

There is not one deciding factor in making a brand stand out from its competitors, but colour and colour theory does play a part.

5. Flexibility

Flexibility is another consideration of good branding. This means that the branding should be adaptable and able to evolve over time as the organisation grows and changes. Flexibility helps to ensure that the branding remains relevant and effective, and that it continues to resonate with customers and stakeholders.

6. Emotional appeal

Good branding should also have emotional appeal. This means that the branding should tap into the emotions and desires of customers and create a positive emotional connection with them. Emotional appeal helps to build loyalty and engagement with customers, who are more likely to remain loyal to a brand that they feel a strong emotional connection with.

7. Coherence

Finally, good branding should be coherent. This means that all elements of the branding, from the logo and colour scheme to the messaging and tone of voice, should work together to create a cohesive and consistent brand identity. Coherence helps to reinforce the brand identity and ensures that customers and stakeholders have a clear and consistent understanding of what the brand stands for.

In conclusion, good branding is a complex and multifaceted process that involves careful consideration of a range of factors. By focusing on clarity of message, consistency, authenticity, differentiation, flexibility, emotional appeal, and coherence, organisations can create a strong brand identity that resonates with customers and stakeholders and helps to build trust, loyalty, and engagement over time.

In the age of digital communication, it’s easy to assume that brochures and printed marketing materials are dead. After all, many businesses have shifted their focus to online marketing strategies, and consumers seem to prefer interacting with brands through social media and email. However, despite these trends, brochures and other printed marketing materials still have a place in today’s world.

First and foremost, print marketing offers a tangible, physical experience that digital marketing simply can’t replicate. When a customer receives a brochure or a flyer in the mail, they can touch it, smell it, and hold it in their hands. This tactile experience can be incredibly powerful, and studies have shown that people tend to remember printed material more effectively than digital material.

In addition to the physical experience of print marketing, there are certain situations where print is simply more effective than digital. For example, if you’re trying to reach an older demographic, print marketing may be the best way to do so. While younger consumers are more likely to use social media and email, older consumers may prefer to receive information through the mail or in person.

Another advantage of print marketing is that it can be more targeted than digital marketing. With print marketing, you can send personalized messages directly to a specific audience. For example, if you’re targeting a specific region or demographic, you can send a direct mail piece that speaks directly to their needs and interests. This can be especially effective in the case of niche businesses or products.

Of course, print marketing does have its limitations. For one thing, it can be more expensive than digital marketing, both in terms of printing costs and distribution. Additionally, print marketing can be more difficult to track and measure than digital marketing. With digital marketing, you can easily track clicks, impressions, and conversions, which makes it easier to determine the effectiveness of your campaigns. With print marketing, it can be harder to tell how many people are actually engaging with your materials.

Despite these limitations, there are still many situations where print marketing can be an effective tool. For example, print marketing can be particularly useful for businesses that are trying to build brand recognition or establish themselves in a new market. A well-designed brochure or direct mail piece can help create a lasting impression and build trust with potential customers.

Overall, while digital marketing has certainly changed the landscape of marketing, print marketing is still alive and well. In fact, for many businesses, print marketing can be a valuable complement to digital marketing strategies. By using both digital and print marketing, businesses can create a comprehensive marketing plan that reaches customers through a variety of channels and maximises their chances of success.

In today’s competitive business landscape, creating a positive customer experience is critical to success. Consistent design across touchpoints within a business is an important factor in creating a cohesive and engaging experience for customers. In this article, we will explore why consistent design is important for customer touchpoints and the benefits it can bring to businesses.

Consistent design helps to build brand recognition and trust. When customers encounter a recognisable, uniform design across different touchpoints, such as a website, social media, and advertising, they are more likely to remember and recognise your brand. This recognition leads to increased trust, as customers perceive consistency as a sign of professionalism, reliability, and attention to detail. In contrast, inconsistent design can confuse and frustrate customers, leading to a lack of trust and a negative perception of the brand.

A seamless customer journey can be created when all touchpoints are easily recognisable as belonging to a brand. When customers move from one touchpoint to another, such as from a website to a physical store, they expect a consistent experience. If the design elements, such as colours, fonts, and imagery, are inconsistent, this can disrupt the customer journey and create a disjointed experience. On the other hand, a cohesive design creates a smooth transition from one touchpoint to another, enhancing the customer experience and increasing the likelihood of repeat business.

By ensuring that all customer touchpoints are singing from the same hymn sheet, businesses are able communicate their values, personality, and message more effectively. For example, a brand that values sustainability can use the same design elements, such as green colours, eco-friendly imagery, and recycled paper, to communicate this message across all touchpoints, allowing customers to quickly and easily understand the brand’s values and message, leading to a deeper connection and increased loyalty.

Consistent design can increase efficiency and reduce costs. When businesses use consistent design elements across touchpoints, they can create templates and standardise processes, leading to increased efficiency and reduced costs. For example, a business can use a template for social media posts, which includes consistent design elements, such as colours and fonts, and reduces the time and cost of creating each post from scratch.

In today’s crowded market, differentiation is critical to success and consistent design can help to differentiate a brand from competitors. A consistent and unique design can help to differentiate a brand from competitors, making it stand out and increasing its appeal to customers.
In conclusion, consistent design across touchpoints within a business is essential for creating a positive customer experience and building a strong brand. By using consistent design elements across different touchpoints, businesses can build brand recognition and trust, create a seamless customer journey, communicate a clear message, increase efficiency and reduce costs, and differentiate themselves from competitors.
